Redlining

Redlining occurs in inner-cities where residents are routinely denied mortgages, loans, insurance and other financial services due to poverty stricken neighbourhoods having higher overall default levels. It is considered to be highly unethical as it does not take into account any of the individual factors of a person’s application for the above services, it fails to recognise applicants as unique individuals with differing abilities to honour their debits and lumps them all in together according to the location in which they reside. The term gets its name from the practice of drawing a red line around a particular area a financial institution has decided to not offer its services to.
